Dax Shepard has not been one to shy away about his battle with addiction, and his wife Kristen Bell has always stood by his side. Now, the Frozen star is getting even more candid about how much her husband's sobriety means to her.
โI know how much effort has to be put into staying sober. I donโt mean that to be like, I come home and see him shaking and looking at a whiskey ad or something, [but] there are different elements you have to deal with when youโre staying sober,โ she explained to PEOPLE. โItโs a ton of mental control and evolution.โ
In the nearly 12 years that the couple has been together, Bell has watched in awe as Shepard navigated the waters of living sober. โItโs just impressive for someone to have been that mindful about something,โ she said.
In fact, she's so proud of her comedian hubby that he says she โspoils the hell out of meโ on his sober birthdays. โThe nicest presents sheโs gotten me are always on my sober birthday. In fact, my real birthday โฆ still havenโt gotten a present!โ he quipped.
โIโm very happy he was born so I celebrate his birthday, but Iโm extraordinarily [happy] that he has stayed sober because thatโs what allows me to have him in my life as a husband and as a father,โ the 38-year-old admitted. Together, they have two daughters: Lincoln, 5, and Delta, 4.
In September Shepard celebrated 14 years sober, and Bell congratulated the milestone with an emotional Instagram post.
โI scrape together 14 years of sobriety, and she writes a little flowery thank you. Now thereโs headlines all over the country about Kristenโs accomplishment of writing this letter. Iโm like, โJust like you to steal my thunder!'โ Shepard joked. โIโm the one that went to 10,000 AA meetings. At no point was the message of any of the stories like, โGood job, Dax.โ It was like, โCan you imagine being loved by a woman like Kristen Bell?'โ
All jokes aside, he's grateful. โIt was crazy sweet,โ Shepard added, โand I loved it.โ
