Middle-Aged Drinkers More Concerned About Reputation Than Health Risks

Middle-aged drinkers are more worried about their embarrassing behavior from drinking alcohol than about the health risks associated with it, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Adelaide. More specifically, people between the ages of 30 to 65 believe drinking is safe as long as they can meet their responsibilities and act in a respectable manner. The main reasons they cite for drinking are to relax, to reclaim or enforce their identities, and due to gender norms. Researchers suggest that public health campaigns would be better able to reach middle-age drinkers if they switched their focus from health issues to showing how drinking can impact reputation.
